mews poem
was there a truth that i missed through the wired phoneline?
“I believed every word that you read
Every glorified tome by the side of your bed
When you swore you’d go right
Then you went left instead
How was I supposed to know? Oh,
Did I miss the sign when you’d answer my call?
Like if between the lines, did one breath say it all?
When you called me naive, did you mean to a fault?”
-from Mews by Gracie Abrams
I wrote this while listening to “Mews” on repeat, so not only is this poem influenced by the lyrics, but it is also influenced some by the cadence. I have been meaning to include voice recordings of my writing for some time now but have never gotten around to it. I’m not at all used to reading my own writing out loud, and I didn’t want to have to listen to myself a dozen times (ahhh!), so give me some grace because I know it’s quite rough. Regardless, I hope you enjoy!
mews poem
we exist only in the
split-second ignorance
of it all -
caught between the
wings of the flight and
the fall.
does your regret fit
between the faux leather
front seats,
or is it something
you can swallow down
past your teeth?
with the weight of
our silence on the
pedal for gas,
are we fastforwarding
time on our way to the crash?
was there a truth
that i missed through
the wired phoneline?
when you called me
after i’d waited for you
all night.
did you choose me in theory
only to find
that i’m not
what you thought?
we can cross county lines,
ignore the little white lies
see the flash of headlights
only in rearview hindsight.
because i did everything right
but it still wasn’t enough
to convince you that i was
someone you could love.
and i can’t fix what’s wrong
if you can’t even speak,
when my hand’s on the door
and my heart’s up my sleeve.
blood on the windshield,
and one casualty from
where i jumped when
we finally maxed out
at topspeed.
did you believe that i
intentionally
slowed us down?
i wish that i did,
god, you can bet
i regret it now.
